And we are back and took a bit of a hiatus; however, we are back focused and ready to hit 2021! Been a crazy ending to 2020, and 2021 is off the rough start; more on that later articles soon. However, part 1 of my favorite styles during this time of year is Smoke Beers as the days get shorter, darker, and much colder! Deriving its name from "Rauch," the German word for "smoke," Rauchbiers are German lagers brewed with malts kilned over smoke and most often from beech wood. The Beer Judge Certification Program guidelines for the classic smoked märzen describe it as "a medium-bodied beer with a smooth, lager character". The flavor and aroma come from the smoke and malt blend, varying in balance and intensity.
These beers have that flavorful, excellent smoke flavor profile and dark amber color and brown as pictured below. This style can beer paired with smoked brisket (which I am currently doing), smoked cheese, and bacon. The ABV can range anywhere from 4.5 to 6% ABV, and once you open up a bottle, you will immediately notice the smoke smell. If you are a scotch and peat fan, this is the beer style for your wintertime beer sipping! Cheers everyone and enjoy!
